Kagan, a self-described bunny hugger, has worked for decades caring for and rescuing animals. He lectures and writes extensively about animal welfare and created nine award-winning documentaries. He developed a Wildlife Interpretive Gallery (exploring the human-animal relationship over time and in different cultures), the National Amphibian Conservation Center, Berman Academy for Humane Education, Center for Zoo Animal Welfare and the Wild Adventure Simulator (a motion-based simulator that builds empathy for other species as people experience animal worlds through their eyes). Kagan's board service has included the Greenways Initiative, Michigan Nature Conservancy, Association of Animal Sanctuaries, American Association of Museums, International Council of Museums and AZA Regents.
